UX Case Study– (proprietary)

Selfie Styler

As Lead UX designer for fashion/tech start-up Selfie Styler, I refined the interface for an app that removed garment size discrepancies for online retail.

Summary

Size inconsistency in the apparel industry is a huge issue for customers and retailers alike. Retailers are forced to carry far more inventory than needed, experience exceedingly high return rates and often bear the associated fulfillment costs. Not only is this a logistical nightmare, but as brick-and-mortar storefronts dwindle, already narrow profit margins are squeezed. Add to this a customer base frustrated with sizing inaccuracies and long delivery timeframes, and the scope of the challenge looms large.

To solve this, Selfie Styler provides near-perfect size recommendations across brands based on a customer’s uploaded selfie. I collaborated with SMEs in apparel construction, operation leaders, business analysts, and developers to define the scope of our intake and refinement process and create an intuitive, efficient UI workflow for this tech.

Process

Building an intake workflow from scratch and making several major pivots, our BA and I defined the status and order of operations. The end result reduced a several-day timeframe and disparate documentation to several minutes and consolidated the process. We improved our efficiency with not only greater accuracy, but we completed our design work 8 weeks ahead of the development schedule.

User Testing

As wireframes were iterated, I created functional mockups in InVision to guerilla-test each screen with the Intake Team. To gain deeper insights, I acted as an intern for a week and used my own wireframes to truly test if the fields were appropriate and in the correct order.  We identified non-essential steps and confusing language while adding clarity to the process through better UX writing, typography, and hierarchy.
